The Lloydpier is an old harbour pier on the river Maas in Rotterdam. In view of the openness of the river and the close proximity of the city centre the pier can accept a high density of urban functions. The trapezium shaped footprints of the city blocks follow the various directional lines of the site. The five lower levels of the blocks constitute a single deep volume covering the entire footprint to accommodate parking, shops, communal facilities and private practices. By alternating the building heights every block could profit fully from views to all sides.
