The aim of the study was to test the development potential of the new high density metropolitan district along a stretch of Amsterdam's orbital motorway known as the Southern Axis. The study showed that a great spatial variety and a broad mix of uses could be achieved within simple built structures without a loss of identity. Urban ensembles on 50 meters deep lots were proposed and tested. The courtyard-less blocks create a large interior space on the lower floors that can be used as parking, commercial or communal facilities. Above these the ensemble tapers up to become a sculptural mountain filled with housing or offices.
