The proposed design of the new collection-depot building of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam is organised as an 'Artwarehouse'. The slim Tower with its small footprint allows the green Museumpark to remain as open as possible and stands in a balanced spatial relation with the neighbouring buildings. The tower consists of two closed volumes with stacked art depots. Inbetween lies a monumental open space to which all depots connect. Oversized glass elevators and large moving platfoms facilitate the art handling which is visible from the public lobby generating a dynamic logistic spectacle. The base of the tower contains and open deport, the top is equally open to the public and gives room to an exhibition space, café and panoramic terrace. Standing as a new icon along the Museum Promanade it depicts the importance of the Rotterdam art collection to the public.
